Ixtapa holds a special place in our hearts, because it has been a place that Jessica has been going to since she was 10 years old! It is a home away from home since we always feel like locals and know so many people throughout the town. It is the one places we return to every year and that we want our children to have fond memories of as they grow!
Ixtapa is in the Mexican state of Guerrero and it is on Mexico’s west coast. Ixtapa itself is a very touristy area, but you can drive 10 minutes south and you will be in Zihuatanejo which gives you a real local feel. My favorite night in Zihuatanejo is Sunday night when the churches overflow with people and afterwards a celebration takes place in the main plaza with performances and carnival games for the kids.
Zihuatanejo itself is a fishing town and a very relaxed lifestyle. For us days are spent by the pool, at the beach, or on a boat. We love to walk around the markets at night and eat at one of our favorite restaurants (Bandidos, Ruebens, Papas Locas, Tentaciones, or Beccofinos) If you go with Jess bring some dancing shoes as she will want to take you salsa dancing.
Our favorite time to go to Ixtapa is usually between October and April. During this time, it is hot out but not overbearing and the water is just the perfect temperature. From January to April is the most exciting time as whales are often spotted breaching off the coast. We have been so lucky to see whales on many trips back and always think it is so magical to see such large animals in their habitat!
