What is Global Entry and what are the benefits of having it over a regular passport?
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows international travelers to go through customs quickly and easily. International travelers can apply online with the government for pre-approved, low-risk status at airports or for re-entry through particular land crossings. With Global Entry, processing times can be as short as 30 seconds upon arrival. The benefits over a regular passport are substantial for anyone who travels internationally frequently, as it eliminates long lines during entry and exit formalities into the U.S. Furthermore, registering with Global Entry also grants access to TSA PreCheck, allowing travelers to go through airport security without taking off their shoes or having to remove laptops from bags.
How to Apply for Global Entry
Applying for Global Entry can be a timely process, so start right away as it can make international and domestic travel more effortless. First, applicants must create a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account online. After completing the online application and paying an $100 nonrefundable fee using a valid payment method (many credit cards will reimburse you for this fee), you will then be asked to schedule an appointment at one of the enrollment centers. Scheduling the appointment currently is the lengthy part of the process, as depending on what city you live in appointments can be hard to come by. The other option that may be faster is to do the interview on arrival from an international trip...check this website to see which airports offer this service. This is done by applying and paying and receiving a pending interview status, which allows you to have an interview immediately upon arrival after clearing immigration on your next trip. Note…we got unlucky last time. We tried it and the wait for the interview was too long for us to make our connecting flight, so if possible plan an extended layover or do it at your final destination.
During your appointment, a customer service representative will ask questions and review your identification documents. Make sure to take your passport plus an extra form of identification such as Driver’s License. During the interview, expect some questions from the interviewer meant to verify what you had written down on your application, it is extremely brief. Once the interview is over they will both fingerprint you and take your photo that will remain on our Global Entry card.
Once approved, your Global Entry card will arrive by mail and the government will issue you a PASSID, also referred to as a “Known Traveler Number.” This is what you’ll need to include when making airline reservations. You can begin taking advantage of expedited clearance processes at major US airports. Take note, however, that membership remains valid for five years, so it’s important to be proactive in terms of renewal so as not to risk being denied Global Entry when traveling abroad.
Once you are a Global Entry member immigration becomes a breeze. You simply go to the automated Kiosk and it will take your photo and let you know you are free to enter the USA.
Note: your children must apply for Global Entry as well. They will not let your children use the Global Entry line if they are not approved.
What is Mobile Passport and how does it work compared to Global Entry or a regular passport?
Mobile Passport is a revolutionary new way to breeze through the airport and it’s FREE. All you need to do is download the app onto your phone. I recommend having the app downloaded and ready to use before taking off. Upon landing you can submit your passport information and trip details on the mobile app, which greatly reduces wait times. The app asks a few simple questions then once you approved gives you a QR code that is valid for 4 hours. Once you have your approval and QR code you can head to the MPC lane, this lane is super fast and has even been quicker than Global Entry.
MPC is especially useful for frequent travelers who otherwise would waste a considerable amount of time filling out paper documents each time they travel. The best part about this service is that it is available without the need to register for Global Entry, conduct an interview, or purchase an enhanced passport. Instead, all you need to do is sign up in the mobile app and be efficiently cleared upon your arrival at the airport. The one huge downfall to Mobile Passport is that it does not grant you access to TSA PreCheck, which for frequent travelers is a huge time saver even domestically.
Pros and Cons of Each
Traveling through airports can be stressful and time consuming, so the Global Entry program and the Mobile Passport app both provide easier and quicker travel experiences. However, there are key differences between these two services that should be taken into account when deciding which one is best for you.

Which program is right for you?
If you’re a regular international traveler, Global Entry is definitely worth the time and money to invest in. The benefits of having Global Entry are well worth it if you travel frequently, and the application process is relatively simple. However, if you only travel occasionally or within the United States, Mobile Passport may be a better option for you since it’s free and easy to use. No matter which type of document you choose, always make sure to keep up with your passport so that it doesn’t expire while you’re away.
