There’s nothing quite like New York City during the holiday season! The city comes alive with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and an electric energy that makes it the perfect destination for a family getaway. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or planning an extended holiday stay, here are some must-do activities to make the most of the season in the Big Apple.
Where We Stayed
We were lucky this trip to stay at the Phillips Club which was in the heart of Lincoln Square and 2 blocks from Central Park. The unit we were in was a one bedroom with a pull out sofa for the kids and a kitchen. We booked our stay through our ThirdHome membership which is a travel club we are apart of that allows us to earn credit with our rental property to book at other rental properties around the world. We loved the location and found it to be a great spot for our family.
Ice Skating
One of the most iconic holiday experiences in NYC is gliding across the world-famous rink at Rockefeller Center. Surrounded by sparkling decorations and the towering Christmas tree, this timeless tradition is a must for families. While it can get busy, reserving a skating session in advance ensures a smoother experience. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a beginner, the magic of this rink is unforgettable.
The experience is even more special at night when the Christmas tree glows brightly, and holiday music fills the air. The rink itself is smaller than some may expect, making for an intimate and classic New York moment. Skating here can be a bit pricey, but many visitors find the splurge worthwhile for the picturesque setting and once-in-a-lifetime experience.
For those looking for a more budget-friendly and less crowded alternative, Bryant Park’s Winter Village offers an incredible skating experience with free admission (you only need to pay for skate rentals if you don’t bring your own). With a backdrop of the New York Public Library and festive market stalls, this rink provides a charming and lively atmosphere that’s perfect for families looking to soak up the holiday cheer.
Tickets for Rockefeller Center skating sessions can be booked in advance at: Rockefeller Center Ice Skating. For a more affordable option, check out Bryant Park’s skating details here: Bryant Park Winter Village.
Exploring NYC’s Christmas Markets
If you love holiday shopping and festive treats, NYC’s Christmas markets are the place to be. The Union Square Holiday Market is a favorite, featuring local artisans, handmade gifts, and delicious seasonal snacks like hot cocoa and roasted chestnuts. The market is a labyrinth of charming stalls, each offering unique and beautifully crafted items, from jewelry and artwork to winter accessories and home décor. Bryant Park’s Winter Village, another must-visit destination, is home to a European-style holiday market with over 100 vendors selling everything from gourmet treats to handcrafted ornaments. The centerpiece of Bryant Park’s Winter Village is its free-admission ice rink, where families can enjoy skating before indulging in treats from the surrounding food kiosks.
Another great option is the Columbus Circle Holiday Market, located at the southwest corner of Central Park. This market offers a curated selection of gifts, from artisan chocolates and fine leather goods to handmade candles and international crafts. Strolling through these charming markets, sipping on warm cider or mulled wine, and listening to the sounds of street musicians creates an enchanting holiday atmosphere that captures the spirit of the season.
The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall
The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall is one of the most iconic holiday experiences in New York City, and no festive visit is truly complete without it. The Christmas Spectacular, which has been a beloved tradition since 1933, is a dazzling display of holiday cheer that blends spectacular choreography, stunning visuals, and holiday magic.
This high-energy performance showcases the Rockettes’ precise and mesmerizing dancing, with their signature high kicks and perfectly synchronized movements that have become synonymous with the holiday season. The show features elaborate costumes, from sparkling sequined dresses to festive winter wonderland ensembles, all adding to the dazzling effect.
One of the most memorable and beloved segments of the show is the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” where the Rockettes perform a perfectly timed routine that looks like a magical army of toy soldiers coming to life. Other standout moments include the “Living Nativity” scene and the spectacular “New York at Christmas” number, which brings the spirit of the Big Apple to the stage with a breathtaking mix of music, light, and dance.
For families, this is a holiday event that appeals to all ages. The combination of festive music, brilliant choreography, and holiday storytelling creates an unforgettable experience that has enchanted audiences for generations. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve seen it before, the Christmas Spectacular promises to create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
