2. Rio Grande Botanic Garden

Explora is a fantastic museum in Albuquerque that is a must-visit for families with kids. This interactive museum is designed to engage children of all ages, from toddlers to preteens, with a variety of hands-on exhibits and activities. The museum is divided into several themed areas, each with its own unique set of exhibits and experiences.

They have an area called “Knee Hi Sci,” which is specifically designed for children ages 0-5. This exhibit allows young children to explore science and engineering concepts through hands-on activities, such as building with blocks and experimenting with water.  Another standout exhibit at Explora is “Air,” which explores the properties of air and the principles of flight. Children can launch paper airplanes, test the wind speed of a fan, and create their own hovercrafts, all while learning about the science of air and flight. Spend the day exploring Albuquerque’s Old Town area and take a step back in time. This area is one of the oldest neighborhoods in America and still retains its original charm. Visit the San Felipe de Neri Spanish Mission, built around 1706 and one of the most important historic sites in the city. It is also the church Rod and I got married at! Explore the galleries, shops and eateries that line the streets, or just take a moment to admire some of Old Town’s colorful architecture. It may truly be one of our favorite parks in the USA. This park is located in a suburb called Rio Rancho, just a short drive from Albuquerque, and offers a range of activities and amenities that will keep families entertained for hours.

One of the highlights of A Park Above is its inclusive playground, which features equipment and activities that are accessible to children of all abilities. We also love the the playground is fully fenced in keeping the kids safe. The playground includes a sensory garden, a music garden, and a variety of swings, slides, and climbing structures that encourage active play and exploration. There are several covered play structures as well which is great in the summer heat!

In addition to the playground, A Park Above also features a splash pad, fun sand box area, and a dog park, making it a popular destination for families with kids and pets. Overall, A Park Above is a wonderful free activity for families visiting Albuquerque, and a great way to spend a day outdoors.

Ride the Tram to the Peak of Sandia Mountain

The Albuquerque Tram is an incredible family activity that should make the top of any family’s list when visiting Albuquerque. The tram takes visitors on a breathtaking ride up to the top of the Sandia Mountains, providing stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape along the way.

International Balloon Fiesta

If you are visiting in early October, the Balloon Fiesta is an event that you simply can’t miss! The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is an annual event that takes place the first 2 weeks of October and is one of the city’s most popular attractions. Thisis the largest hot air balloon festival in the world, drawing over 500 hot air balloons and hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the globe.

During the nine-day festival, visitors can watch as hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes take to the sky, creating a stunning display of color and movement. The balloons launch in mass ascensions very early in the morning, where hundreds of balloons take off at once, creating an unforgettable spectacle. Visitors can also watch as pilots compete in a range of events, including races and challenges that test their skill and precision.

In addition to the balloon events, the festival also features a range of activities and entertainment for visitors of all ages. The Balloon Fiesta Park, where the festival takes place, is transformed into a carnival-like atmosphere, with food vendors, live music, and other attractions. Our kids absolute love the Balloon Glow event at night followed by an incredible firework show! Families can also explore the Balloon Discovery Center, which offers hands-on activities and exhibits that teach visitors about the science and history of ballooning.

A bonus tip is to dine at he Albuquerque Sawmill Market.  This is an excellent dining spot for families looking for a unique and enjoyable experience. The market offers a variety of food options from a range of vendors, making it easy to please even the pickiest eaters. Families can choose from a range of cuisines, including Mexican, Italian, BBQ, and more, all within a single location. In addition to its dining options, the Sawmill Market also offers a range of activities and entertainment for families.
